Can I upload files to my sites root folder?

Yes. This is sometimes needed for the purposes of creating a custom robots.txt file, uploading a Google Site Map, or placing a particular file there to prove to some remote service that you're the site's administrator.

Here's how:

  1. Log into your site as an Administrator.
  2. Create a page named RootAttachments.
  3. Set the Page Security of this page to Administrator View / Administrator Edit. Any other setting will not work.
  4. Save the page.

Any file you attach to this page will be placed into your site's root folder and will be publicly viewable. For example, if you attach a file named test.txt to this page, you'll be able to access it at http://YOURSITE.editme.com/test.txt.

Likewise, deleting an attachment from this page will remove it from your site's root.

Troubleshooting

  1. Be sure to check #3 above - this step is required and frequently overlooked. This setting must be in place before and attachment is uploaded. If you uploaded an attachment when the security was not correctly set, you'll need to upload it again after the security is correctly set.
  2. Make sure if you've uploaded a robots.txt file, you're accessing the site with a custom (non-editme.com) domain. If you access your site with the editme.com domain the default robots.txt file will always be served.
