Staff Lounge: New Directory of Customer Sites

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Today we replaced the old monolithic customer-generated list of EditMe sites on our wiki with a new dynamic site directory. The most recently added sites are automatically listed at the top, and each site is added to one or more categories to make it easy to find sites around a specific topic. A tag cloud navigation makes it easy to browse through the various categories.

The new directory is fed from EditMe's Delicious account, which is also available at http://delicious.com/edityourweb. We've also added it to our main web site (this one), which gets a lot more traffic than our wiki. Getting your site listed in this directory should significantly boost its search engine visibility.

In the past, customers have added their own sites to the list on our wiki. Going forward, customers must request that their site be added or wait for us to add it, which will be a few months after the site goes live if it meets our criteria. Instructions for requesting inclusion of your site and criteria that sites must meet are available on the wiki. We will be adding sites that meet these criteria (public-facing, non-offensive, and complete) as they become available, so your public-facing site may be added without your intervention. Use the Private Support forum to communicate with us about this directory.

As with the old directory, this is by no means a complete list of EditMe customer sites. The vast majority of EditMe sites are limited to a select user group. These customers either do not want to publicize the site or have it locked down altogether behind a login. We hope this new directory will show how EditMe can be used for public facing sites as well.

The directory is driven by a new Bookmarks Browser module that will be available to all customers within the next month or so. If you have a Delicious account, you'll be able to list your shared bookmarks on your EditMe site just like our sites directory. Like the Forums module (which is slated for the next release) we're stretching this new module's legs on our wiki before letting it loose on customer sites.
