Wiki Turns 14 - Thanks Ward!
I’m a day late on this, I know… it’s been a crazy week. The AboutUs blog posted a happy birthday message to wiki technology yesterday and launched WikiBirthday.org to celebrate. The first wiki created by Ward Cunningham (who went on to start AboutUs) went live 14 years ago yesterday. The commemoration got lots of attention on Twitter, and a NYT syndicated post in ReadWriteWeb.
The site/post calls for everyone to share their moment of wiki discovery. For me, it was maybe 2000 or 2001 (?) when I started playing with Wikipedia and found that poor old Ron “Pigpen” McKernan was the only member of the Grateful Dead with just a stub page. It was so cool to just add it right then. Though I didn’t go on to be a big Wikipedia editor, I started using a wiki for personal use and soon after as an intranet (the venerable OpenWiki) for the web consulting agency where I was working at the time. Soon after I would develop and launch the first hosted WYSIWYG wiki product. So thanks, Ward! I wouldn’t be doing what I now do every day if it weren’t for you.
